Why we believe in a homegrown life

Our Story

Meet the Haselmayers. We are a nourished fam, living on hunted game, homeschooling our babies, running small businesses, and leaning into the Lord’s calling.

Two years ago I wanted a way to teach my girls about real food, food freedom, and the beauty that comes with nourishing ourselves well. Unfortunately, there was nothing out there.

Conventional nutrition education is based on the USDA MyPlate food guidelines (a revised version of the food pyramid) and is incredibly one-sided, outdated, non-descriptive, and poorly designed. In order to teach my girls the truths about important topics like saturated fats, raw dairy, grains, and more, I decided to create a resource on my own. I took my cues from the most well-respected experts in the real food nutrition world including the Weston A. Price Foundation, Lily Nichols, RDN, Holistic Nutritionists, and the works of many others.

I've worked hard to make sure Homegrown is highly descriptive so that students can make educated decisions around food without being swayed by government or industry influences. Homegrown also discusses the greater complexities of our food system including the quality of foods (organic, genetic modification, pasture-raised animals, etc.), various types of farming, food labeling, and sourcing.

It is our mission to help shape the way the next generation views food, cooking, and proper stewardship of health. Will you join us?

Real Food Defined

What is real food?

Diet culture, fad diets, and conflicting nutritional advice from our government and food industry can leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused.

Our Nutrition Workbook is designed to be a descriptive tool of real food defined by a few simple terms:

We believe real food is:

  • Naturally Occurring

  • Nutrient-Dense

  • Unrefined

  • Not Denatured

Naturally occurring, meaning the food you eat can either be found, as in, in nature or has undergone a natural process (like fermentation) that doesn’t require the use of synthetic chemicals or nutrient-altering processing methods.

Nutrient-dense, meaning the food has been grown, harvested, preserved, or prepared in such a way that has enhanced or enabled optimum nutritional quality.

Unrefined, meaning no nutrient-containing part of the food has been removed or decreased.

Not denatured, meaning the proteins, enzymes, fats, vitamins, minerals, and healthy bacteria remain intact and active.

Who wrote the nutrition workbook?

All Homegrown resources are written by a homeschool mom with a love for writing and a knack for research. Liz Haselmayer found herself searching for curricula that supported her family’s values around health and nutrition. Soon after realizing a clear lack in the marketplace, she set out to create her own curriculum by sourcing information from a wide range of organizations who value the pursuit of unbiased science and continual research. As she synthesized the data into Workbook One, Liz enlisted the help from Holistic Nutritionist, Ali Beck of Fresh Roots Health to serve as her fact-checker and guiding mentor. Liz also learned from other industry experts and leaned on their expertise to bring forth a descriptive nutrition curriculum unlike anything else.

Why doesn’t the Homegrown Nutrition Workbook correspond with the recommendations from USDA MyPlate?

We’ve found several recommendations in the USDA MyPlate food guide that do not align with our definition of “real food” which is–food that is naturally occurring, nutrient-denseunrefined, and not denatured. For example, MyPlate continues to advocate for low-fat, or fat-free dairy products that alter the natural state of cow’s milk and thus change its nutritional value. In addition, MyPlate lacks any mention of ingredient quality or sourcing. While they do push for whole grains (stating half of your grains should be whole grains rather than refined), they make no mention of how these grains are prepared or grown for optimum nutrition. Their fruit and vegetable recommendations also lack any differentiation between organically grown produce and its genetically modified counterpart, which we find incredibly important in one’s search for real food. Finally, there are plenty of online and printed resources that pull directly from the USDA MyPlate food recommendations for those who approve of the values and principles encouraged by such a program. Instead, we aim to offer something different.
